2020 marked the 50th anniversary of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore’s designation as a National Park. To observe this milestone, I partnered with the National Parks of Lake Superior (NPLSF), Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, & the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore to kayak and hike the archipelago, photograph their history and natural beauty, and help to develop new informational tools that will educate and inform the public about this incredible national resource.
The 21 islands of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore were designated a National Park in 1970. The islands are Ojibwe native land and the heart of the Anishinaabe creation story. For centuries they were cut, mined, farmed and commercially fished by European settlers. The National Park was established to protect, preserve and share these beautiful and naturally wild islands and shoreline.
